The capital and largest city is Ljubljana, which is also the tech hub of Slovenia. Upon the conclusion of the Winter season, they dress up in creepy masks and costumes to symbolically ‘scare away’ the dark times. The country also nurtures a large pool of beekeepers, with 90,000 owning bees-- this means nearly one in 20 people out of their entire population are beekeepers. Pretty cool, right? Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, is commonly referred to as a ‘fairytale castle,’ as there is a castle that was originally a medieval fortress from the eleventh century which stands as the most reputable landmark in the country. With its beautiful river and architecture, the capital itself has been said to resemble Venice. Slovenia is also one of the most eco-friendly nations in the world and was ranked as 88.98 by the Yale Centre for Environmental Law and Policy. Slovenia was one of the latest countries to adopt the euro in 2007, replacing their former currency, the tolar.
